ON THE FIELD: how do we do this?
YeJ has set up computer labs:
YeJ also provides teachers and facilitators to teach new media applications and media awareness in these labs. We believe the most effective way of becoming media-literate in our society is to become a producer oneself.
CARREFOUR JEUNESSE EMPLOI NDG
In collaboration with this CJE-NDG, we have donated computers and are setting up a program, for youth 15-24, to enable acquisition of New Media skills and to help them explore new career options. The program will welcome the participation of youth recruited from all community groups and schools.
CENTRE COMMUNAUTAIRE JEUNESSE UNIE II
In 2001, our after-school program at CCJU taught youth-at-risk basic computer skills, along with image manipulation and web-design. The kids were encouraged to express themselves, and in the process develop useful computer skills that could help them at school and at home. Eighteen young people, aged between 13 and 17, participated in classes held two nights a week, using computers donated by YeJ. The computers were also used by youth to surf the internet, work on homework, or just have fun.
EDUCATION PLUS
Located in the Côte-des-Neiges district, Education Plus is a private high-school for students who are finishing their high school diploma. We are currently teaching a multimedia course, for credit, in a computer lab we donated to the school. Geneviève Bernier is our teacher and animator, and her 16 students are aged between 16 and 18 years. Since the beginning of class in September, 2000, we have received nothing but positive feedback from other teachers, the principal, the students and their parents. The curriculum is based on image manipulation, web design, digital video, and media literacy.
CENTRE COMMUNAUTAIRE JEUNESSE UNIE
"In 2000, YeJ successfully completed a pilot project in the Parc Extension district of Montréal. Partnering with the Centre Communautaire Jeunesse Unie (CCJU), YeJ ran two after-school programs that targeted youth-at-risk between the ages of 13 and 17. The two courses, one focused on software and the other on video, touched a total of 16 youth over a period of four months (March - June, 2000). Some of their work was showcased at CCJU's annual general meeting, to the resounding applause of their peers and parents."
THE YOUTH e-MAGE JEUNESSE CENTER
Based on the experience gained in the last two years, we are conducting a feasibility study towards the creation of a New Media studio. This studio would welcome young people throughout the Greater Montreal region to participate together on location, and through the internet, in the creation of multi-media projects of their imagination.
FUTUR PROJECTS
We are continuously developing new partnerships, with corporations and community groups, and are exploring new directions and strategies to achieve our goals in collaboration with our young members. So far, we have four independent projects slated for 2001.
